ILSE RUPPERT: PHOTOS OF BERLIN SUBCULTURE 1980-1982

Ilse Ruppert is a German photographer whose work in the early 1980s captured West Berlin at one of the most volatile moments in its postwar history. With the Wall still standing and the city operating as a politically isolated island in East Germany, Berlin became a magnet for artists, musicians, draft dodgers, and outsiders — and the underground music scene that grew there was unlike anything else in Europe.

Between 1980 and 1982, Ruppert photographed the punk, new wave, and post-punk scenes happening in clubs like SO36 and Risiko. Her work documents the raw energy of the bands and the people who came to see them: kids who'd built their own subculture in a city where the usual rules didn't apply. The photographs are dark, direct, and unposed — closer to the spirit of the bands she shot than to any kind of music industry portraiture.

Berlin in this period gave the world Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Tödliche Doris, Malaria!, and a constellation of DIY scenes that fed back into the broader European post-punk and goth movements FACT. draws on. Ruppert's photographs are a record of where that aesthetic actually lived and breathed — sweaty rooms, cheap drinks, hand-cut zines, leather and lipstick and broken amplifiers.

We're featuring her work because the people in her photographs are the people the monkey boot was for. Mods, skinheads, punks, and goths picked up the boot as their own; in Berlin, the same lineage of independent music and street style was running on a parallel track. The boots, the music, the photography — same root system.
